Definitions of terms (National and EU):

Begriff Bedeutung
Self-weight (SW)

The weight of a vehicle that is completely equipped, ready to be driven, standing on a horizontal, even lane without any load.

Total weight (TW)
The weight of the stationary vehicle ready to be driven along with the load.
Maximum permissible total weight (MpTW)
The maximum total weight that a certain vehicle may have.
Maximum weight (MW)
This is the maximum technically possible total weight
of the vehicle specified by the manufacturer.
Maximum permissible load capacity (LC)
This is the maximum weight of the load that can be
borne by a certain vehicle.

Moreover, the manufacturer of the motor vehicle or the trailer equipment often specifies maximum loads such as:

  • Maximum permissible trailer load with / without braking facility: the maximum actual weight of a trailer to be coupled to a motor vehicle.
  • Maximum supporting load (SL): the load that may act on the trailer equipment when the vehicle is stationary.

When steering the combinations, the lower value of load specified should not be exceeded.

What does maximum supporting load (SL) for a trailer mean?

This specification describes the maximum permissible vertical load for the vehicle. This value must not be exceeded, as this may result in damage to the towing device, the control device or other parts.

Where can I find the vehicle identification number on my trailer?

The vehicle identification plate is mounted in driving direction on the right side of the vehicle. Additionally, the vehicle identification number is on the right side in the driving direction or right on the front of the vehicle in the frame and looks like in the picture below.

The nameplate of my trailer is unreadable. Do I get a new one from Pongratz?

Getting a new nameplate is possible. Please contact the closest Pongratz dealer and request a new one.

What is a wheels-in or wheels-out trailer and how do they differ?

Wheels-out trailer: tires outside the cargo area, lower center of gravity, lower loading height, lower loading width

Wheels-in trailer: tires below the cargo area, higher center of gravity, higher loading height, higher loading width

What should I consider when buying a trailer, so that it fits my vehicle?

Legally decisive are the driving licenses of the respective vehicle drivers.

For excellent driveability, it is crucial that the trailer be in a horizontal position while being attached to the towing vehicle (i.e. neither the loading surface is tilted downwards in the front nor the rear).

The technically permissible trailer and drawbar loads of the towing vehicle must be observed.

Decision support for braked/unbraked trailer?

Weigh your personal benefits! The following questions can help you to decide:

  • What do I need the trailer for?
  • What load do I need?
  • What am I allowed to tow with my vehicle?

If you are in doubt which one to choose, you might want to consider a braked trailer, as the brake is also a safety aspect.

What do I need a safety clutch (sway coupling) for?

Through activating the stabilizing handle two friction linings of the left or right are pressed against the trailer ball of the towing vehicle. Roll and pitch movements are suppressed noticeably in the base.

Advantages:

  • Increases the critical vehicle speed (note the allowed speed limit).
  • The trailer can be slowed down faster in an emergency situation.

What is the difference between anodized aluminum and galvanized steel?

Our aluminum side panels are made of a pressed aluminum hollow chamber profile which is anodized as a protective layer against external influences.

Galvanized steel means that our components are made of one material of steel, which is used to protect against external forces.

What material do the tarpaulins consist of?

Our tarpaulins are made of polyester with a PVC coating. This ensures that our tarpaulins provide high tensile strength, cold and heat resistance, and kink resistance.

What are tarpaulin roof bows and what do I need them for?

This component prevents the tarpaulin from strong sagging (for example caused by too much water formation) and is therefore recommended with the purchase of a flat cover.

Is the supporting wheel mounted onto every trailer?

You can order the supporting wheel for unbraked trailers optional. The supporting wheel for braked trailers is part of the standard equipment.

Is a spare tire included with the delivery of a trailer?

A spare wheel or spare wheel holders are not standard equipment and can be ordered on request.

Is it possible to put the control device to the top of the drawbar, even if it is provided for this trailer as a bottom installation?

Yes, it is theoretically possible, please contact the Pongratz dealer of your choice.

Can I use accessories (rails, supports, grid, etc.) of other manufacturers with your trailers?

The ability to use accessories from other manufacturers is given. However, in this case, this invalidates the warranty.

Use & safety

Safety note

Read and follow the safety instructions given in the operating manual in order to prevent accidents and injuries. You can find the operating manual here

How do I correctly load my trailer?

It is absolutely necessary to comply with the maximum permissible weights (total weight, load capacity, vertical loads, towing capacity) of the trailer and the towing vehicle.

Total weight = trailer weight + weight of accessories + weight of the load.

The minimum and maximum vertical load must not fall short of or exceed the permissible weight range.

Only load the trailer if it is connected to the towing vehicle and secured against rolling. Please, also pay attention to a uniform charge distribution. Use, if available, the existing support facilities around the trailer to keep it in a stable position. The center of gravity of the load should be as centrally above the axis as possible. Also, bear in mind that both sides of the trailer are loaded evenly.

The load must be secured with covers (for bulk cargo) or lashing (e.g. straps) at any time.

Please refer to the manual if you need more details.

Why can’t I move backward with my braked trailer on a steep slope and what can I do against it?

This can have several reasons:

  •    the brake is set too tight
  •    the overrun damper is broken
  •    alternatively, other reasons

Therefore, Pongratz recommends inspecting the brake in the closest repair shop.

The overrun shock pushes together when reversing, which leads to a reaction of the overrun brake and thereby the vehicle brakes. Therefore, some overrun device manufacturers offer the possibility of mounting a mechanical reverse lock, should it be required to push back permanently uphill.

The brake of my trailer is stuck, I parked my trailer with applied brake over the winter, what can I do against it?

Transport the vehicle to repair shop and let them correct and adjust the brake system properly.

How to charge the battery of a 3-sided tipper (3 SKS) or rear tipper (RK)?

The vehicles are equipped with a plug or cable set, which is only able to transmit a very low charging current and is therefore only suitable for the conservation of the battery.

It is important that the vehicle must have this charge/conservation function.

In addition, our trailers are equipped with a charging socket in the side support. Only through the charging socket, the battery can be charged.

What ist the right tire pressure for my trailer?

Please refer to the following table or the manual for the proper tire pressure of your trailer.

Am I allowed to mount several additional collars on the baseboard wall?

It is recommended to mount a set of additional collars on the baseboard wall. The body height has to be in an appropriate relation to the vehicle width (lane). Please note the increased danger of tilting and windage areas through high structures.

On request, special solutions can be offered with all relevant protection devices.

What can I do if I need a new chassis or frame?

Please send a request to a Pongratz dealer of your choice. To provide you with an offer, it is important that you know the VIN and type designation of your vehicle.

If the part that has to be changed is one which includes the chassis number, Pongratz requires a Scrappage Certificate or the original component. Then, you will receive the desired spare part.

How often should the brakes be inspected?

The sliding and pivot points of the control device must be lubricated or oiled at regular intervals. This should be done every 10,000-15,000 km or at the latest every 12 months.

For more information, refer to the supplied documents of the brake’s manufacturer.

You can also find here user manuals from AL-KO and Knott.

What part of the brakes can I inspect myself?

We recommend you to read the supplied operating instructions of AL-KO and Knott. You can also refer to the manual in the download section.

Which oil needs to be refilled for the tipper trailer?

Only use the oil that is recommended by Pongratz. Please refer to the manual for more details (Downloads).

It is recommended to use the hydraulic oil HLP ISO VG 32 or HLP 32, which must not be mixed with other liquids in any way.

How do I mount the tarpaulin buttons on the trailer?

If you did not receive an instruction with your order, you can download a PDF version in the download section.

Do I really have to use the trailer supports when loading a vehicle onto the trailer and if yes why?

If you load your trailer using loading ramps, there is high pressure on the trailer construction. The use of the parking supports can substantially reduce this pressure and help to avoid damage to the trailer and therefore increase the life of the trailer.

Safety note:

Correctly mount the loading ramps in the right spot and secure them against slipping. Please also pay attention to the carrying capacity of the ramps (see if available on the label on the rail) and make sure that the maximum payload of the trailer is not exceeded, as these often restrict the use of the ramps. During operation, the ramps are to be supplied in any existing holders or secured in any other locations.

Am I allowed to overload my trailer?

A load above the maximum permissible weight is strictly prohibited. By overloading the trailer it will void your warranty, you risk damage to the vehicle and increase the risk of accidents.

Can I register my Pongratz trailers with a lower maximum permissible weight?

All Pongratz trailers use the bandwidth control for the highest allowable weight, and therefore the trailers can be approved for transport quickly and without technical changes with any weight (within the registered range of your vehicle).

Also, other EU Member States offer the same or similar conditions. Please, contact the approval authority in the relevant country for more information.

Please also refer to the CoC-paper of your Pongratz trailer, to determine the correct settings for the bandwidth of the maximum permissible weight.

In the following table, the National regulatory information for Austria is listed.

Standard values of minimum and maximum weight range:

HzGG 750 kg 450 - 750 kg
HzGG 1.000kg 750 - 1.000 kg
HzGG 1.300kg 950 - 1.300 kg
HzGG 1.350kg 950 - 1.350 kg
HzGG 1.500kg 950 - 1.500 kg
HzGG 1.500kg 1.100 - 1.500 kg (only PLL 250/12G and PLL 250/15 G)
HzGG 1.600kg 960 - 1.600 kg
HzGG 1.800kg 1.500 - 1.800 kg
HzGG 2.000kg 1.500 - 2.000kg
HzGG 2.500kg 1.500 - 2.500kg
HzGG 2.600kg 1.560 - 2.600kg
HzGG 2.700kg 1.620 - 2.700 kg
HzGG 3.000kg 1.800 - 3.000 kg
HzGG 3.500kg 2.700 - 3.500kg

NOTE: The minimum reference value of the weight range has to be checked with the minimum braking range of the overrun brake. Should these two values do not match, the higher value must be used.

Example: Specified in COC paper:

Highest permissible weight range: 950 – 1500 kg

Overrun brake with a brake range: 1100 – 1700 kg

That means one may use the bandwidth of 1100 to 1500 kg!

Can I mount the rail in the middle of the lightweight motorcycle trailer (EMA 750 U)?

Yes, this possibility exists. If you regularly only transport one motorcycle, we recommend a reconstruction due to better weight distribution.

Care & maintenance

How do I correctly maintain my trailer?

In order to maintain smooth working and proper condition of your vehicle, you should follow the maintenance tips provided in the following and in the manual.

Maintenance work should always be carried out by specialists. In particular, work on the brake system and the axle(s) should be done in the workshops of authorised Pongratz dealers.

Cleaning the vehicle is an important aspect to ensure proper condition. For this purpose, clean your trailer with water and brush, if necessary, with the high-pressure cleaner. Let your Pongratz trailer dry properly and avoid permanently wet conditions.

Even with the least use, maintenance work must be done at least once a year. Snow and water-based paints must be removed promptly from the trailer and the accessories (top level tarpaulin, flat tarpaulin, etc.).

Can I repair my tarpaulin myself?

If your tarpaulin was damaged while using it, contact an authorized repair company or one of Pongratz dealer‘s.

Legal

What driving license do I need to use an unbraked car trailer?

Legal Basis in Austria

Driving license class B

  • The self-weight of the towing vehicle increased by 75 kg must be twice as high as the total weight of the trailer.
  • It is allowed to drive a motor vehicle of up to 3.5 tonnes of maximum permissible total weight, even if a lightweight trailer is pulled with it (a lightweight trailer is a trailer with a maximum permissible total weight of 750 kg). This means that the sum of the two total weights can reach up to 4250 kg.

Driving license class E

  • The self-weight of the towing vehicle increased by 75 kg must be twice as high as the total weight of the trailer.
  • It is allowed to drive a motor vehicle of up to 3.5 tonnes of maximum permissible total weight, even if a lightweight trailer is pulled with it (a lightweight trailer is a trailer with a maximum permissible total weight of 750 kg). This means that the sum of the two total weights can reach up to 4250 kg.

Of course, when interpreting the legal text, the technical maximum weights of the vehicles must be taken into consideration (towing capacity).

Examples

Abbreviations: SW = Self-weight, MTW = Maximum permissible total weight, TW = total weight

Example 1:

  • Towing vehicle: SW = 945 kg MTW = 1200 kg
  • Unbraked Trailer: MTW = 750 kg

The vehicle combination may be used with driver's license B. The trailer may reach a TW of 510 kg (945 + 75 = 1020 / 2 = 510)

Example 2:

  • Towing vehicle: SW = 1750 kg
  • MTW = 2240 kg
  • Unbraked Trailer: MTW = 500 kg

The vehicle combination may be used with driver's license B. The trailer may reach a TW of 500 kg.

What documents do I receive together with the trailer?

A CoC (Certificate of conformity) paper or possibly an individual approval for Austria or Germany.

For vehicles that are delivered to Switzerland, there is the possibility of a 13.20.A forms exhibit.

What tires can I install on my trailer?

You may only use tires that are registered in your car papers. When changing the tires freewheeling and wheel cover have to be inspected and adjusted by a specialist workshop.

Is purchasing a Pongratz trailer abroad possible and what happens in the case of warranty or is it feasible to import a Pongratz trailer and what is necessary to register it in my country?

It is possible to buy trailers elsewhere, but it is not recommended since you have to consult your dealer in case of complaint cases as only they are responsible for the warranty of your trailers. Moreover, additional costs such as for the transfer of the trailer can incur.

More details on the age and consent have to be clarified in advance to speed up the importing process. Since these details differ on the national regulations of the country of registration, please refer to the relevant authorities of the country of registration.

Therefore, you must clarify which documents you already have or will receive and whether the vehicle is already registered or not.

What is a „CoC-paper“?

CoC-paper means that an EC certificate of conformity is available. This allows you to perform a simple registration of your trailer in the entire EU area.

I lost my registration papers, what now?

Please consult a Pongratz dealer of your choice with a loss confirmation and a clearance certificate. In many cases, a new authorization is not required, and a duplicate can be issued.

Are wheel chocks required?

It is legally required to carry along wheel chops only with braked trailers. For unbraked trailers, this is not the case.

May I drive with a rolled up high cover (front and back)?

No, the tarpaulins must be closed before driving. Driving with tarpaulin structures is allowed only if the trailer is properly closed and all covers are fastened.

Do I have to register my accessories like collars or tarpaulins?

Legally it is stated that each component that can be attached or removed with simple hand tools does not have to be registered.

Why is there no indication of the load on the lashing possibilities?

Basically, for vehicles of the EU vehicle categories O1 and O2 it is not mandatory to indicate the weight on lashing possibilities (however, national regulations can differ).
